The Local Investment Commission is a citizen-driven community collaborative involving efforts by the state of Missouri to work with neighborhood leaders, citizens, business, civic and labor leaders to improve the lives of its children and families in Kansas City and Jackson County. LINC has a strong interest in health-related issues including children’s health insurance, Medicaid, aging, and dental services. LINC has separate Health and Aging Committees chaired by community volunteers.

LINC intends to use the Ford/UAW report to work collaboratively to address pressing health care issues, particularly those affecting persons living in the urban core.

LINC provides financial and technical support to 60 schools and neighborhoods in Jackson County. That effort includes coordinating before- and after-school care for over 6,000 elementary students in the Kansas City, Mo. School District.

LINC was a semifinalist in the Innovations in American Government Award in 1998 and 1999. The award is sponsored by the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government and the Ford Foundation. Semifinalists were selected from over 1,400 applications submitted by city, county, state and federal government.
